Part 2 of this course is aimed at mastering the various preparatory phases leading to trial in a criminal or penal matter in order to assist you in reaching identified goals.
Course outline
  • This course is a follow-up to the course entitled: Case management in criminal and penal matters - Part I
  • This course will cover the following topics: elaborating your theory of the case, case analysis and review of evidence, strategic decisions of the defense (judge or jury trial, presenting or foregoing a defense, proceeding to a preliminary inquiry or not, witness selection, evaluation of risks, deciding on whether the accused should testify or pass, re-opting, etc…)
  • Other topics that will be addressed are: preparing witnesses, preparing your client for trial, ethical issues, presentation of preliminary motions, jury selection and the opening statement (a chance to put forth your theory of the case). Possible arguments on sentencing will be outlined as well.
Profile of the Instructor
Me. Conrad Lord is a member of the Quebec Bar since 1991. He is a named partner in the firm of Lord, Poissant & St-Laurent, a firm affiliated with Bélanger, Sauvé, S.E.N.C. area of legal expertise lies in criminal and penal matters. Prior to establishing his own practice, as a criminal defense attorney, Me. Lord started his career at the Quebec Ministry of Justice, Attorney-General's offices.

Me. Lord is currently President of the Association des avocats et avocates de la défense de Longueuil and President of the Comité Justice criminelle et pénale, Longueuil. As well, Me. Lord sits as a councillor for the Barreau de Longueuil and as a member of the Executif Committee of the Association des avocats et avocates de la défense de Montréal and as a member of the Criminal Justice Committee of the Montreal Bar.

Me. Lord has been an invited guest commentator for the RDI news reportage as well as for the Télé-journal of Radio-Canada.
