The goal:
To provide lawyers wishing to develop their practice in criminal law an over-view of the steps that need to be taken into account prior to trial and to provide lawyers in other fields with basic knowledge required to inform their clients of their rights, answer questions regarding process and procedures in the event of an arrest when the client has contacted them directly instead of a criminal law specialist.
Course outline
  • This course will cover the various practical aspects involved in practicing law in the criminal field from the initial client contact and differentiating between situations where the client is detained and those where he or she is not
  • Participants will benefit from advice that can guide them through the legal process in terms of their obligations towards the client, the judicial system and their ethical obligations
  • This course also aims at increasing self-confidence of the legal practitioner in terms of exchanges with the various players in the criminal or penal context (police, Crown representatives, judges, magistrates, etc…)
Profile of the Instructor
Me. Conrad Lord is a member of the Quebec Bar since 1991. He is a named partner in the firm of Lord, Poissant & St-Laurent, a firm affiliated with Bélanger, Sauvé, S.E.N.C. area of legal expertise lies in criminal and penal matters. Prior to establishing his own practice, as a criminal defense attorney, Me. Lord started his career at the Quebec Ministry of Justice, Attorney-General's offices.

Me. Lord is currently President of the Association des avocats et avocates de la défense de Longueuil and President of the Comité Justice criminelle et pénale, Longueuil. As well, Me. Lord sits as a councillor for the Barreau de Longueuil and as a member of the Executif Committee of the Association des avocats et avocates de la défense de Montréal and as a member of the Criminal Justice Committee of the Montreal Bar.

Me. Lord has been an invited guest commentator for the RDI news reportage as well as for the Télé-journal of Radio-Canada.
